Calling all Potters!

A message from Helen Bonmarito:
“The Pottery Olympics is just a few weeks away. August 6th is the date, and it will run from 10 am to 6 pm. There will be music, food, and stuff for kids, a “Pay to Clay” booth, a sales gallery tent, throwing for Empty Bowls and of course Olympic Events! All proceeds benefit COCAAN’s hunger relief projects, especially the very popular Empty Bowls event in November.

Here’s where you come in…….
You are the backbone of the event. Please come and participate. We’ll need (1.) potters to throw, (2.) potters to help at the Pay to Clay booth, (3.) potters to participate in the Olympic events, (4.) potters to trim bowls the next day, (5.) pottery for the sales booth (100% of sales go to the artist), and (6.) we’ll need wheels to set up outside. Clay will be provided.

I hope you’ll consider your own annual event. It’s fun, and it’s a nice way to get together with other potters.

Please contact Helen Bommarito and let her know how you wish to be a part of it.

Empty Bowls

How is everyone coming along with your donations for Empty Bowls? We still have clay available at Cindercone. It’s Laguna “B Mix” cone 10, and we do have a very limited amount of cone 5 for anyone who needs it. We hope to see 20 finished bowls returned for every 25-lb bag of clay taken. We welcome you to donate as many as you like. It’s a good opportunity to practice up your throwing chops, and maybe try out that new glaze application you’ve been thinking about. And it’s our way of giving back to the community, through COCAAN’s premier hunger relief project.

Any questions? Contact Helen Bonmarito.”

Artist’s Statement:
"My interest and education in architecture have strongly influenced the direction I have taken in working with clay. My desire to explore form, both functionally and aesthetically is derived from that background. Throughout my career my primary focus has been form and surface development, and I have tried to incorporate glazes and glazing techniques that enhance those concerns. These concerns were the foundation of my earliest involvement with clay and my effort to understand the complexities of the ceramic process over thirty years ago, and they remain at the heart of my work with clay today. "

Don’s resume includes being Ceramics instructor at Oregon School of Art and Craft, Head Ceramics Instructor there from 1980 t0 1983. Ceramics Monthly has featured him in several of their editions. You can see some of his current work in the Sunbird Gallery in Bend.
