“WildFire” Ceramic Showcase
The Boys and Girls Club almost caught on fire with the absolute total success of OUR SHOW!!!!! Congratulations to all who pulled this together!

Together we sold close to US16,000, and had over 1,000 visitors!

Special thanks go to Jim and Becky Powell who supported us with a very generous cash donation plus hard work, a constant interest, and motivational spirit! Thank you Jim and thank you Becky.

Thanks as well to our Eugene sponsor Georgie’s. Your contribution was greatly appreciated!

More thank-yous are due to OPA from Portland and Local Clay from Eugene. We got a lot of inspiration, information, guidance and support from both these clay associations. Our group booth, e.g., was brought in from Portland OPA!.

Thank you so much!

A message from our President, Linda Heisserman:

“Connie and I worked on the by laws. We combined Local Clay's and OPA's and came up with these for Clay Guild of the Cascades Please look them over...I would like to vote on them or make corrections..on Tues. We will also be looking way into the future to find a date for Wildfire next year so we can reserve our space at the B&G club. Anything else you want on the agenda, please let me know.

Linda”

EMPTY BOWLS
COCAAN’s Glaze Party was great. A little over a dozen people, while having a good time, worked well in the glazing of 400 bowls! An immediate firing was started the same evening and finished next day by Helen Bommarito.

We are on our way to COCAAN’s goal of 1000 bowls for the 11/13 Empty Bowls Event.

If you want to make bowls for donation, clay is still available at Cindercone or Blue Spruce Gallery, neighbors in the Old Mill District (550 Industrial Way).

You can also contact Helen Bommarito (541) 317-5953 or Bob Sant at 541-317-7745

CGC is still hoping to have each member contribute 30 bowls (or more if you can)! You can bring your bowls to Helen or to our meetings

MARKETING YOUR WORK: The NCECA Journal from the “Borders in Flux” Conference had some interesting articles about marketing work. Lisa Rankin encouraged potters to look past minor flaws and imperfections in their work. You will never make a perfect piece, and if you apologize to customers who are interested in a piece, you will never sell it. Be enthusiastic about your work, after all enthusiasm is contagious. She also mentioned some opening lines to use with customers. “May I help you?” is not good. Better options are “What can I help you find today?” or “Which of these pieces caught your eye?” These open ended questions are not often answered with a terse “yes” or “no” so the conversation is not stopped abruptly by the customer response. She also stressed the importance of informational tags that are included with the piece. They spread your story and attach more meaning to your work. Bill Hunt discussed traits of people who get to the top of their field. The main characteristic they all have is: persistence. He points out that on the road to artistic fame, you hear the word “no” far more often than you hear “yes” so you must be able to keep going in the face of failure. He also talked about the numbers of people who achieve a limited amount of success, then disappear, proving the old adage that “the hard part isn’t ‘getting there,’ the hard part is ‘staying there.’” Even if you achieve success, you must still have persistence. He also has noticed that most successful crafts people were respectful of others, and that seemed to help them. He spoke about how publicity and promotion work. To be done properly, it should provide sound education to the receiver. It should be interesting, useful and informative, not pushy or rude.

ONLINE SALES: Www.ArtandDesignOnline.com is a website for selling art. There is no fee to be listed, they did not say what their fees are for selling through them. To be listed, log on and click on “Join the Directory”. Another website that recently contacted us is www.unearthit.net. They list artwork for sale, arts events and other things of interest to people taking a “creative holiday.” They charge a flat fee for listings of artwork for sale, there is no commission. Event listing is free.

NCECA IN PORTLAND: The National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts will hold their conference at the Oregon Convention Center, March 8-11, 2006. An OPA/NCECA committee has been formed, there will be many volunteer opportunities there.

Deb Shapiro is in charge of volunteers. Contact Deb at 503-624-5780 or shapiroporcelain@yahoo.com
It is really fun to volunteer at NCECA, you get to meet ceramic artists from all over the world.

STUDIO TOUR DURING NCECA: There will probably be a self-guided tour of local clay artists’ studios at the end of the conference. Janet Buskirk will coordinate this, and it will probably look very much like the OPA Holiday Studio Sale Guide. It will be juried by some of the NCECA people. Look for information in a later Newsletter.

Artist’s Statement:

"My interest and education in architecture have strongly influenced the direction I have taken in working with clay. My desire to explore form, both functionally and aesthetically is derived from that background. Throughout my career my primary focus has been form and surface development, and I have tried to incorporate glazes and glazing techniques that enhance those concerns. These concerns were the foundation of my earliest involvement with clay and my effort to understand the complexities of the ceramic process over thirty years ago, and they remain at the heart of my work with clay today. "

Don’s resume includes being Ceramics instructor at Oregon School of Art and Craft, Head Ceramics Instructor there from 1980 t0 1983. Ceramics Monthly has featured him in several of their editions. You can see some of his current work in the Sunbird Gallery in Bend.
